Planting

The Planting of Eccleston Square can be downloaded as a PDF here

Since the devastation of the 1987 Great Storm, the whole garden has been replanted with a selection of shrubs and trees to provide interesting and exciting displays throughout the year.

Our flowering year starts in January with a display of Mimosa, rapidly followed by our collection of Camellias (124) coming into flower, which continue to flower until the National Collection of some 60 different Ceanothus blossom in April.

In May the first of the collection of some 150 climbing roses burst into bloom, including many Tea Roses that are too tender to be found commonly in British gardens. The climbers are followed by Shrub Roses and Ramblers.

After the replanting that took place post the Great Storm, the garden was inspected by The National Garden Scheme and we were acknowledged as being an outstanding horticultural example of a garden square and so invited to open for the NGS, we have continued to open once a year for the NGS.

The discerning garden lover will notice a subtle increase in plants like Kaka Beak, Cabbage Trees and other southern hemisphere plants.

The number on the left is the plant number, the number immediately following the name is the bed number. The species are listed first, followed by cultivars , the date is the date of planting. The bed plan showing the actual position of each plant within individual beds is held by Roger Phillips.
